[Day 7 - Late Afternoon] The Outer Limits

Postby Dapper Dog » Wed Jun 20, 2018 6:37 pm

Event Type: Side Event
Power Cost: 0
Participants: Unlimited
Timeslots: Late Afternoon

Description: The Aznuri Monks are a curious if martial group and have decided the best way to learn about these strangers is to invite them to try their meditation techniques to push the mind and body beyond known limits.

Rules: Players must choose the Mind Fortress option and then one additional option of their choice. Those players that have benefited from Mentor bonus or are Jedi or Sith trained have all difficulties increased by one due to their prior Force training interfering with the techniques of the Aznuri Monks. Players must strip down to minimum clothing as is custom by the monks. Weather conditions apply as well.

Mind Fortress: This is a Cool or Discipline check at Average, Force Users must also roll their Force Rating as well. They may use the Force pips for Advantage or Success, normal rules apply to Force pips for using the Dark Side. Players suffer one setback for meditating in the rain. Failure on this roll upgrades the difficulty of the next check they make while a success will upgrade their check in the next roll. Triumph will double this effect. Despair means they have caught the fever.

The player can end it here. Force Users that proceed to the next portion suffer 4 Conflict. If they proceed pick one option from those below, again Force Users can utilize their Force Rating on this roll unless they commit some to activate applicable Force powers:

Test of Strength: The player engages in hand to hand combat with monks, this is a Brawl or Resilience check at Average, the players suffers 6 strain as well.

Frozen Soul: The player challenges the elements and are put in a cold box to push their body to the limits, this is an Average Resilience or Survival check, with a setback due to the intense conditions of the cold.

Fire Walk: The player walks along a pathway of red hot coals and flames to push them to the limits. This is an Athletics or Coordination check at Average with a setback due to the intense heat.

Leap of Faith: This is a dangerous choice, the player leaps into a deep small crevasse below filled with water, this is a Coordination or Athletics check at Hard difficulty. Failure means they Fall as if from Long, suffering 20 wounds and 20 Strain. A successful roll is doubled for purposes of accrued points.

Venomous Ink: This is a Daunting Resilience check with the Difficulty upgraded, 1 challenge die and 3 difficulty dice. The player allows the Aznuri monks to tattoo his back with their chakra designs, if the player can endure it with a successful roll their Wound Threshold is increased by 1 permanently. If they fail the roll their Strain Threshold is reduced by 1 permanently. If a Despair is rolled they also reduce Wound Threshold by 1 permanently. If a Triumph is rolled, then double the effect so 2 wounds are added for the player.

Players can not aid each other with boosts.

If the players can accrue 35 successful rolls then the Strike Force will be immune to the Fever unless they are in the Blight, which will be reduced to Average. Triumphs success or fail count as two successful rolls, so a successful roll with a Triumph is worth 3 successes.

Rewards/Outcome: Possible immunity to the Fever.

Trust Modified: N/A
Power Modified: If 30 successful rolls are accrued gain 10 power.
Duty Gained: N/A

Postby Galen Sol » Wed Jun 20, 2018 7:22 pm

Galen was predisposed to learning whatever he could from the monks. Learning the ways from the Force from different perspectives had become his goal on Nar Shaddaa, first learning from Lyshea. The Black Witches had come next, and now these monks.

He did as instructed, stripping down and trying to meditate. As always, however, meditation was difficult for him and he did not find the focus he'd hoped for. The challenge within the cold box was easier, however, as he had endured many cold nights throughout his life. This was still the coldest he had ever been, but he persevered.

Once the challenge was completed, he offered an awkward bow to the monks, stating his desire to learn more.

Sabine, having nothing better to do, decided to join the monks in their exercises. She empited her mind - the painkillers probably helped - easily enough, and then there were several options, from safe to hazardous.

"Ink me up." she stated boldly, and crossed her organic and metallic leg as she sat down. "This is pretty toxic, you do know that?"

"You have not seen me after a bender yet. I've been pumped full of painkillers and shine for the last month. Ink me.."

"As you say..."

"Make it a shrill. It's an ugly mando cat."

"...sure, why not."

Soon, the woman's back proudly displayed her clan symbol. Woohoo!

"Emptying my mind has never been easy for me..." Hacha sighs, annoyed at the lack of his clothing, and the insistence that he turn his cyberbrain down. It had been a long time since he was without it, so he decided to effectively repartition it for a while. It is not a pleasant experience.

Postby Luth Khalan » Wed Jun 20, 2018 8:10 pm

Luth knew she needed to learn more about things like this, so she went to join the monks in their exercises. She concentrated in her meditations, feeling the Force... feeling the pain and death that echoed there, mostly, what her mind tended to cling to. She didn't reject it this time, though. She embraced and accepted it as part of her life, part of all life. It was time to stop rejecting and being afraid of who she was and what she did. Her mind was prepared.

The ink she chose didn't go as well. She felt the other side of the Force during it, but it wasn't enough to block out the pain during the long time it took for the mandalas to be fully drawn. But... it was there, at least. And it covered the scars. She could finally show her back.

already the monks were trying to sell them things, this time meditation techniques from the looks of it. Still he had been encouraged to get along with the locals so here he was. He didn't have much trouble stripping, though it took him some time to divest himself from all of this clothing, until he wore only his slacks. Any more then that would be a bit more of a show then was asked for.

It did reveal his chest, which was crisscrossed with scars, a stark tableau of the life he had chosen to live. The rain didn't seem to bother Zane, as it rain down his skin, and perhaps surprisingly to most he easily began meditating.

The next part was choosing a test, Zane knew the one he should be picking. The one that called to him the most, but he pushed aside those feelings, the monks didn't need to know that much. Instead he attempted the firewalking, and while he nearly made it, he dumped from the fire in the last moments... He still had a ways to go.

Postby Dr. Cole Ormont » Wed Jun 20, 2018 9:59 pm

Cole stripped to the waist, revealing the angry scar that crossed his stomach a chest. Though it was healing well, it was livid against his pale skin. The rain pattered on his shoulders, wetting his hair, and he was grateful for the cooling rivulets that coursed over the skinny ropes of muscle and tendon.

Despite his coaching with Ashla, meditation did not come easily to the doctor. His mind seemed to — eventually — slip into a state of peace, and the monks were satisfied by his efforts. The call of their drums, signalling that he may rise from the depths of his mind, came moments too late. The serenity of his mind was suddenly lanced by the hum of a lightsaber blade and Cole jolted, eyes flying open, searing pain cutting through him. He pushed a hand through his wet hair, panting, trying to catch his breath.

When the monks presented him a choice, it seemed to Cole that he faded away somewhere. He knew that his choice would inform the monks of how they would treat him and, despite — or perhaps because of — that, he picked without thinking, and found himself under the traditional needles of ancient tattooing. The pain was welcome, a distraction from the pain in his gut, even though the ink would burn in his flesh for days to come, it was still welcome.

The design, chosen by the monks, covered the right half of his back, starting near the scar on his hip. It depicted an apparently dead Tree of Life, subtle DNA helices worked into the cracked and decaying bark; a skull was nestled into the crook of the main branches, all but consumed by the growth of the tree; and a heart was strangled in the roots.

Azura didn't know what to think of these guys. All she knew was what they taught seemed...wrong to her in some way. Her feelings seemed to rebel at the idea, but she pushed on past them.

She spent some time getting her mind into place, and an idea formed in her mind. She spoke no words as she looked up at the monks, who seemed to understand her without words being spoken.

Some time later, the animal that appeared in her mind was now tattooed on her back, and she felt stronger for it.

Postby Tra Kize » Wed Jun 20, 2018 10:13 pm

Tra was not uncomfortable with his own body. He knew he was up there in years and had a bit of pudge, but he accepted that as part of aging. He stripped down to the essentials as expected and joined the others in meditation. And he found that it was quite a relaxing experience as well, pulling his mind from the stresses of the resistance and allowing him to focus. He wasn't about to become a monk or anything, but he understood why they practiced meditation much better now.

But when it came to the physical feats he politely declined. The old man knew he was no spring chicken and had no plans on injuring himself trying to act like a young kid.

Postby Baesal Zyn » Wed Jun 20, 2018 11:14 pm

Baesal observed the test and found them odd, to say the least. She understood them to some degree for these tests were primal in design: they sought to test physical fitness above all else which would be dominant in the wild. Alas she was not a wild creature herself....unless...copious amounts of alcool were involved.

Not thet the monks would provide any

Still...something could be learned from all of this.

There is no ignorance

She sat in meditation, in the rain, at the instruction of one of the Aznuri monks. The meditation technique was quite different from bith Sith and Jedi but she had been growing in her own path for a while now and despite the conflict and the contradictions, the Force rang true in her mind.

Mind Fortress, 1 setback and increased difficulty (weather and Jedi), discipline (corrected): 1eA+1eP+3eD+2eF+1eS 2 failures, 4 Light Side
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

success

takes 4 conflict

She breathed deeply as she walked towards another challenge. She had eying the arcane tattooing for a moment wondering if she would try it...she could trust the Force despite knowing her physical limits.

No...that would be foolish. She knew who she was and to rely on the Force to such an extent without training or preparation and not in a moment of nescessity was arrogant.

She instead turned to the cold box

''Mind over matter'' she told herself as she entered the contraption.

Frozen Soul: setbacks, upgraded, trust, redo: 2eA+1eP+3eD+1eB+1eS+2eF 3 failures, 1 advantage, 3 Light Side
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

She did not last long, however

Screw this shit

Pilgrimage to the monks was meant as a spiritual journey for some, and may have been something of that kind to Oddyn. For him, however, it was about the indomitability of his spirit as a way to harness the ails of the body, still very much ravaged. Would the exotic monks help him rebuild himself? He had little to lose.

Between catching a cold and rewiring his body to master itself, there was not much of a decision. He just went out there into the rain, and took benefit from his acquired indifference to pain and discomfort to become cut off the outside world. The eye of his mind turned inward, he descended into his memories...

LA7. Mind Fortress. Cool. Weather. Trust.: 2eA+1eB+2eD+1eS 2 successes, 1 threat
ImageImageImageImageImageImage

...Whatever he had found in them, it sustained him throughout the flooded meditation, and spurred him to quick decisions once he emerged from that strage state of mind. Spring returning to his step, he knelt with his back toward the monks, and spread his arms like a shriek-hawk.

"Tattoo me."

Either from the blueprint on his shoulder, or straight from his soul, the monks conjured a breathtaking image of the shriek-hawk, and poured all the man's defiance in the face of death into it.

LA7. Venomous Ink. Resilience. Daunting. Destiny. Upgrade from Mind Fortress.: 4eP+1eC+3eD 1 success, 2 threat, 1 Triumph
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Oddyn had risen, and fallen, and risen again, in an acrobatic glide of soaring and plunging. What hadn't been killing him, in the end had been making him stronger. This time it was no different.

She was willing to join in this nonsense if it meant impressing the locals and gained some more allies. Even if their methods were strange. After the initial meditation, which proved easy enough with the help of the Force, she was given several options. Now, Layne was not inclined to get tattood by these strangers. And she didn't really fancy the cold water. Brawling could be fun, but seemed safe enough that it wouldn't impress.

Jumping into mysterious holes without knowing what was at the bottom though, that was just perfect.

So she jumped. Into darkness.

And then there was a loud thud as the ground cut off her fall in very much the same manner that a period marked the end of a sentence.

Silence followed.

It was wet and miserable up here but Rav didn't mind it too much. He'd sat out in plenty of rainstorms back on Uvena, and to be quite honest it was nice to just get his fur wet. A light oily sheen spilled out on the surface of the water as it pooled around him.

Sitting naked in the rain proved to be quite calming, and he happily sat in peace and quiet for as long as the monks would let him. The sound of not being asked stupid questions by Jenkins was perhaps the best sound he had heard in a long time...

The monks then disturbed his inner peace with the offer of a bunch of other tests. He chose the What's in the Box test, but it turned out to be him. After a while he got tired of sitting in the cold and got back out again. Whatever the point of that exercise was he didn't get it, but the monks didn't seem to care either way so he just shrugged and wanted off to find a towel and whatever had happened to his clothes.

Intrigued by the strange monks, of the Force but not the Jedi, Aran found it impossible to stay away. Even as he struggled with their techniques, he found it comforting. It recalled his upbringing in the Temple, being asked to do things that were difficult yet transcendent by elders who knew so much more than him.

MIND FORTRESS: 2eA+1eP+3eD+1eS+1eF 1 success, 1 threat, 1 Dark Side
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

He felt the Force guide him. Adrenaline gave his limbs the controlled tremors of a revved engine ready to have its throttle opened up. He threw himself from the high precipice towards the crevasse. If he succeeded, he would never feel the rough rock of the walls, only the cold plunge into the water below. As he neared the point where he would plunge into darkness, he felt a sudden rush of fear and doubt, and at that moment, reached out to the Force...

LEAP OF FAITH: 1eA+1eP+1eB+1eF+4eD 1 threat, 1 Dark Side
ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

And then he was through, swimming up again, accepting congratulations and a towel, trying not to let his face show his disturbed thoughts. Maybe, like the pool, they would return to stillness on their own.

Tethys is as curious about the forest monks and their ways as they seem to be about the relief forces, and quite willing to try meditating with them. The rain doesn't bother her much--after the desert conditions of Rygor, it's more of a relief than a hardship. She casts a more skeptical eye on the further tests the Aznuri favor, though; the extreme, rather performative demonstrations seem at odds with the calm and balance taught by the Jedi, and she's content to watch rather than participate.

Stopping here for now--unless we end up 1 success short of a benchmark by the end of D7, in which case I might YOLO one of the tests.

Re: [Day 7 - Late Afternoon] The Outer Limits

Postby Lyseil Panteer » Thu Jun 21, 2018 3:14 am

This was all so incredibly fascinating! Lyseil hoped to make lots of notes as she observed the monks taking people through various trials, until one of them encouraged her to experience it first-hand. Well then! She was a firm believer of more hands-on experiences when it came to research, so Lyseil cheerfully decided to try it!

Stripping down to the bare minimum, the Panteer officer wasn't particularly sturdy built or toned... she had a bit more plumpness to her thighs than most soldiers did, but her arms and abs at least showed signs that she had been working out the past weeks. A little.

The meditation was... a little boring, but she pushed through it, even as she felt it drain her focus near the end. The monk at least said she showed promise, and offered her a choice of a challenge. Test of Strength, Fire Walk, Frozen Soul, Leap of Faith, Venomous Ink. That all sounded dangerous and yet exciting, but after mulling it over, she settled on Frozen Soul - maybe it was some test of composure?

... Ok, that wasn't too far off the mark, and she was concerned as she was still wet from the rain earlier, but the monk assured her that it was all part of the trial. "Embrace the aspect of the chill winter; let the ice harden your resolve."

Nodding, Lyseil climbed into the cold box, and remembered her own experience with the cold. Back home on Alderaan in the high mountains, the coldness of the deserts... the miserable conditions on Felucia. She pushed through. When the monk checked up on her, she was still focused on enduring as long as she could.

In the end, the monk pulled her out before she would suffer hypothermia, but she had impressed.

Garth had no shame in stripping down to near nudity before the monks. Taking the lead from the monks and wearing only his undershorts and his two necklaces, he joined in their meditative exercises, finding his centre with little trouble.

Given his success, Garth opts to press on and when they whisper to him of a rite of passage those who prescribe to their ways undertake, he could not pass up the opportunity. Letting the wizened old monk lead him away, Garth returned an hour later. As a pilot, he was unsurprised that his inner soul was revealed as a pair of wings, but he was definitely impressed with the work.

The droid dog followed the friendly Alderaanian Noble but was quickly separated. Glancing around in synthesized confusion at a possibly equally confused pair of monks, it laid down in the rain and waited. They performed maintenance, removing it's outer plating. This was not abnormal. They left it there, in the rain. It's sensors briefly faltered, and imagery flashed in it's digital mind.

A blue planet. An outstretched hand. An unknown quadruped in a forest. An Acklay. A rising cross shaped star.

The dog fought the urge to howl as the imagery stopped, and watched as a monk beckoned it to a secluded spot. There was a sudden damage indicator to his hindquarters, but it was minimal. It would not impair his function. The damage type was.. unknown. He glanced back at the finished work.

Image

He did not understand.

He wandered off in search of something else that suited his function.

Arali decided it best to respect the customs of the monks, to build trust, as a representative of the Jedi. Meditation in adverse climates was nothing new, and Arali was able to find her center with relative ease.

The fire walk, though? That went poorly. She'd seen similar traditions before, and it seemed straightforward enough. Quick, light steps so that the coals don't have time to burn your feet. It shouldn't be too difficult. But when she tried it herself, she caught herself thinking about it far too much, and she had to step off the path.

Still, she paid her respects to the monks, and made her way out, though she took the time to check on Layne as she went.

Postby R4OXY » Thu Jun 21, 2018 6:44 am

R40XY trundled in as best as it could to the area, but ze's treads were obviously not made for a forest. After a few stops and starts and one tipping incident, ze finally made it to the area designated.

Ze moved up to one of the monks and attempted to make ze's thoughts known. However, the monks were clearly not entirely familiar with ze's language abilities. After some brief attempts at communication and one poorly drawn diagram etched in the sand, the monks understood.

They lifted R40XY and brought ze into the rain. As the rain poured down over the shiny chrome chassis, R40XY felt an odd feeling filling ze.

A feeling of being slowly filled with water. As ze's treads slowly sank into the mud and their visual optics filled with rain, ze began to curse prolifically at their maker for giving ze any curiosity and beeping loudly to be extracted by the monks.

After a sufficiently interminable time, they came and extracted the droid from the mud with some difficulty. After their assistance in cleaning ze's treads, ze proceeded to scoot back to civilization at top speed. That was one experiment that would not be repeated.

Ashla begins meditation. It is a foreign style, but ashla was able to settle her mind. Mostly.

Ashla begins taking the fire walk. That seemed like fun.

Coal Walking: 3eA+3eD+2eS+2eF 3 failures, 2 Dark Side

((Spending Destiny to flip the Dark Side for successes.))

It did not go well. As Ashla stumbles into the fire pit, she reaches out for the Force and her sword helps her. Disturbed, she leaves the event quietly as soon as possible.

Jax centered himself learning the meditative techniques of the monks might help him fight some of his own inner demons. He listened to their instruction and practiced their techniques he found it to be rather calming and he strode forward to a trial with a sense of inner peace. Not that he had achieved it but that perhaps it was possible.

Jax approached the chasm stripped to only his pants he looked down into the crevasse this challenge called to him, called to his demons his thrill seeking his adrenaline. He came to realize that it was a part of him and it was a part he could not lock away. The man inhaled deeply letting the adrenaline fill his veins not trying to rein it in, letting it sharpen him. He closed his eyes and jumped feeling the world rushing by him until suddenly he was encased in cold as he plunged into the water.

He swam back up the surface gasping for air feeling like a more complete man.
