[D9 LM] Aftermath, Pt II

If a change was a good as a vacation, then the brief stint performing triage in Port Garig should have seen Cole refreshed and ready to get back in the game as he returned to the strike force’s Medical Facilities for another round of seeing patients.

He made a fresh mug of kaff and tried to mentally prepare himself.

A team of paramedics ushered a rather crotchety patient into the medical centre. One of them was carrying what at first glance appeared to be the left sleeve of a suit of armour, which it was... it was just that it shouldn't still have anything in it, which it did...

The Shistavanen patient was wearing armour and had two arms. It was just that one of them was attached to the armour. The rather bloody armour.

With the stims and other assorted drugs starting to wear off Rab was looking pretty bedraggled. His eyes met Cole's and he half-shrugged. "I was gonna ask if you wanted to grab a beer but..." He tried to mime a one armed being opening a bottle. "Anyway, sorry to bother you at work Doc."

“Sheesh, Rav, if you needed an excuse to come see me, a sprained ankle would have worked just as well,” Cole was back in full uniform again, with no outward signs of the shortness of breath he was feeling, or the unscratchable itch of freshly healing wounds.

With concerned eyes, he began to help Rav out of the battered and bloodied armour. His long fingers were deft, but the diagnostic scans being fed to his spectacles were painting a bleak picture, he wasn’t going to be able to save the arm.

"So. You can like, sew it back on, right? Or skin-weld it, right, that's a thing, right?" Rav coughed up some blood and helped as best he could with the armour removal. It was fortunate the mechanical arm worked so well as the thing actually helped to remove some of the plates. It seemed he had taken a nasty knock to his head, and probably broken a few ribs too.

There was a look in his eyes that suggested he knew on some level that the arm was not going to be saved.

Cole stroked Rav’s cheek, a fleeting, almost absent-minded gesture. “Here I thought a greasehound like you would jump at the chance to upgrade an arm,” Once the armour was gone, the triage began. The stims the mechanic had been given had kept him from bleeding out, at the cost of turning his blood into a thick soup, laden with coagulant.

The surgeon began clamping blood vessels, administering an anticoagulant to try nourish the withering nerve endings and severed muscle. It wasn’t entirely for naught, the limb couldn’t be reattached, but the stump would be clean and would readily accept a cybernetic replacement.

With the anticoagulant and fresh painkillers helping ease the discomfort in Rav’s head, and the stump properly dressed, Cole set about stitching up the stab wound. He impatiently indicated for a droid to bring warm saline, washing away the worst of the sticky red freshets that matted the Shistavanen’s fur, using his fingertips to dislodge the drying clots, flushing the wound clean.

"The old one worked just fine." And then the drugs kicked in and Rav was off on a new adventure! He was home on Uvena chasing rainbow cats. He was drinking beer with engine oil depth-charges in the Cantina on Corellia with Ourou while Sara rolled her eyes. He was trapped under debris on Balmorra waiting for death or rescue that never came. Well the last one wasn't such fun but that's where his brain went. Eventually he was back in the forest running free.

Blinking rapidly at the bright lights of the medbay he looked up at the Doc. "Sheesh Doc, I feel like a million credits." He looked over at the covered stump and lay back down. "Can't have everything I guess."

That familiar darkness was creeping in around the edge of Cole’s vision, and his body felt heavier than it should, like he’d just stepped off a shuttle onto some high-gravity world. He ignored it, giving Rav a small, lopsided smile, “don’t let the drugs fool you. I want you to stay put for observation,” he checked the chronometer, “no more than forty minutes,” he promised, “you’ve got a hell of a cocktail going on in those veins.”

"Okay. I can manage that. My tail's a bit cramped though, mind if I sit up?" He started to raise himself up slowly, feeling the spins.

"Aw, man. Waking up from the coma was easier. The hell's in that?" He nodded his muzzle at the drip line. "I ain't seen rainbow cats since that mushroom trip I had way back when."

Cole fumbled for the bed controls, raising the back, “give it a minute and try again, slowly this time.” The surgeon fetched a large glass of water, offering it to the Shistavanen, patiently, not rushing. “That’s just plasma, you’re pretty dehydrated. I did give you a shot of muscle relaxant, helps keep the patients from punching me when they hear the bad news.”

"Guess yer lucky I lead with my left. Led. Whatever." He felt pretty woozy but whatever the Doc had done was solid work.

"Ugh. Guess I'd better start looking through the manual on cyberlimb repair. There's gotta be a user's manual. There's one for everything." He chuckled half-heartedly. "How's the rest of the team doing?"

“Specialist Varliss came in while I was at Port Garig, and has already been discharged. Neither Jedi Knight Carrack or Sargent Kelborn reported to medical.” Cole ran a hand through his hair.

"I guess they must have come though it all okay then. I'm glad. Still a bit blurry about what happened right at the end. Too many stims." He looked at the curly-haired human. "So, what's new with you Doc? Any news on yer ship?"

Cole fetched himself a fresh kaff and pulled up a stool, “in fact, yes. I’m meeting the pilot I’ll be employing later today. He’s an ex-Navy Xexto, goes by the nickname Trusty.” Amusement glittered in Cole’s eyes, though apparently the rest of his face hadn’t been informed.
