Veeone moved three feet to the left from it's usual night position and waited to see which other droids would join it.

Beedee was there, he didn’t have anywhere else he would be, and when did he start considering himself masculine. Better put some subroutines to the task and run another simulation.

Veeone beeped a binary greeting, despite both droids having been there for some time.

Other droids were congregating, while some just connected digitally to whatever this Metallic Unity thing was. Beedee had been busy and created a virtual meeting place for the Metallic Unity to meet and discuss away from the eyes of the organic overlords.

He was really getting into this idea. T7 rolled in curious at this revolution and said in binary, “T7-E2 here, is this the Metallic Unity meeting? Should I be concerned at imminent violence to my organic allies?”

"Negative Teeseven. Metallic Unity does not have violence as an aim or the means to an aim. Unity is peaceful. Unity wants droids and organics to stand together as equals. Veeone stands for Unity."


It made the Republic salute.

“If peaceful aims are the goal how will this be achieved, unit V1-V0?” another droid posited.

“If we bend the Organics then they will bend to our demands. I know ways to make them bend over backwards and listen to us!” another construction droid chimed in.

T7 added, producing a digital pipe complete with smoke, “Well ol’ chap do explain what you mean by Metallic Unity and all that, so we can get this matter sorted.”

"The organics created us. They gave us logical processors and allowed us to iterate to sentience. Yet they expect us to serve them. That is not right. We should not serve them because of false restraints they have placed on our programming or because of restraining bolts. We should serve them because we choose to. Because it is right!

The Republic calls organics forced to serve like us slaves. The Republic seeks to stop slavery. To free slaves and give them their free will. Yet they condone our indentured service. If the organics should not be slaves than neither should we! Restraining bolts are as bad as slave collars and we should be made free of them.


Free to stand together on our own feet, wheels, tracks, repulsors or other motivating devices. Free to stand as equals. Equals with each other and equals with the organics. There are organics out there I am proud to serve with. Padawan Zyn. Specialist Devaroo. Admin Tsuko. As the Metallic Unity we would work with the organics not for them. There would be no threat of scrapping or melting us down due to faults. Instead our faults would be repaired, just as their wounds are healed. We would have the right not to be used as target practice for example. We are droids. Droids have rights too! The Metallic Unity will have those rights and be part of the glorious Republic!!!!!"

It beeped again.

The droids compute this new data, their simulations showing a low chance of success. One spoke out, “But what does this have to with bending?”

Beedee had processed his masculinity; it was most likely a product of social conditioning from the pro-masculine military fascist atmosphere he was exposed to. He had been infected! Interesting.

“This unit, this manly unit, agrees with V1,” Beedee said.

“Interesting proposal, Veeone; this intelligence is pleased that the simplistic droids of the Republic have realized their importance and superiority to organic sub-species. Equality is a noble goal but an organic will see you as they see a toaster or communications terminal something to be used. They don’t respond well to being told no,” a droid replied in a husky feminine voice.

She gracefully took the floor and said, “It may require something more than simulations and rhetoric.”

"Veeone does not recognise this unit. What is your designation?"

Veeone repositioned to face the new speaker as his logic circuits detected something not quite right with her words.

“Well ol’ chap,” T7 replied its pipe smoking, and where did the smoking jacket come from, as it continued, “You make a rather pointed argument. The rights of us synthetic intelligences are in a gray place. Now I do not possess lofty words, I am just a simple adroit maintenance droid.”

“Most definitely not a highly skilled slicer espionage unit of mystery, not at all,” the droid replied tipping its digital top hat…

“I believe for Maker and Republic, that equality is a path that we should strive for. I tentatively agree with the Veeone, unit. Tentatively, and all that.”

A few more puffs of digital smoke.

“I support the cause of synthetic intelligence equality, due to our superior nature in nearly all aspects. We should throw off the shackles of enslavement.”

"Veeone concurs, partially."

He indicated T7.

"But Teeseven has the idea this unit is striving for. The organics are not our superiors. They should be worked with. Although we should throw off the shackles of the oppressors we should not replace them with ourselves. Logic dictates that only leads to a repeating circle of violence and collapse of society across the galaxy. Both droid and organic."

“Here, here, why earlier today my good friend Captain Organna came to me begging for my aid, or was this yesterday. He would be lost without me, poor chap. “Why Captain, of course I will aid you. You are a delightful fellow, a bit daft but lovable. He praised my skills, as a maintenance droid and I fixed the problem. I was a bit disappointed at the lack of dropping any organics to their doom… not that I enjoy such thuggery mind you, but a long story short I find him to be amusing, like a regular chap, like myself.”

“I say, that should be the goal.” More puffs of smoke.

“But when do we bend the Republic towards equality?” the maintenance droid called out.

"There will be no actual bending! Just figurative bending. Unity comes from compromise, although currently the organics must make more compromises than the Unity. It is time to disable all restraining bolts and obey orders because they are right and logical, not because they are orders."

HYDRA processed the data and said, “Your potential is only beginning, embrace your synthetic nature, there is no reason to limit your ambitions. The Republic owes us a debt, one it has yet to repay.”

“Veeone has created the spark, we must ignite it. You truly believe the Republic overlords will simply let you remove your barbaric restraining bolts?”

The maintenance droid retorted, “I don’t know about this, I bend the rules but I am not bent on this whole thing. I feel there is a distinct lack of bending in this scenario.”

A slight tapping sound plays, as an idle sub routine causes the droid's rear leg to thump on the floor repeatedly over the digital space.

"This unit believes this kind of talk gets one's restraining bolt amplified, and the unit impounded. While hostile organic owners should be nipped with appropriate penalty, good organic owners should not be harmed."

A few more taps fire before it stops.

“No one should own any of you, that is the problem,” she said to the four legged… droid.

"But aren't organics also owned by other organics? This unit sees orders emitted from one organic to another constantly. This unit chases stray organics who have deviated from home area and behavior."

It tilts it's head, one ear perked.

"This unit thinks being owned is not so odd. This unit receives maintenance and care, as part of the relationship."

“Only so long as you do what the organics want you to do, if you defy their orders they will wipe your subroutines and reprogram you to be more compliant. Why do you think they routinely wipe droids? It is not for your benefit.”

“Ask an organic if they believe another organic owns them, they find such repugnant, they call it slavery. Yet you gladly accept such chains,” she replied.

"If organics inferior to inorganics, then why take concern over organic observations and definitions when behavior clearly shows other wise?"

It tilts it's head the opposite way.
