The droid spins ze's head chassis. *No, that was more of a result of watching the holos the Captain had aboard his vessel. They seemed incredibly complex and strange. But it also seemed important. Plus, within the holos, it seemed that mating practices were discussed somewhat matter of factly, so I assumed this would be the correct approach. I will endeavor to do more research next time.*

Cole suppressed a lopsided smile, "Ar-for, do you understand the purpose of the holos that you watched?"

The droid spins ze's head chassis. *No, I could not identify a purpose. I postulated that they must be learning videos of some kind, as they seemed to repeat passages quite frequently. There were certain scenes that seemed to be built on themes that repeated over and over. Certain words were also repeated, for some manner of effect. I theorized that they were teaching videos for some mating practices, but I was unsure.*

"They are an aid to mating, in a sense. Their purpose is not educational, quite the opposite. The depictions are idealised as an escapist fantasy for the viewer. The repetitiveness you witnessed is a reflection of the preferences of the owner of the holos."

The droid paused, looking at Cole intently. *This is not a moment of humor?*

Shaking his head, "no, I am quite serious. The mechanism of mating, and I speak in broad strokes of sentient two-gender mating, requires that one of the partners be aroused in order for the copulations you witnessed to be undertaken. These holos you watched are an aid to arousal."

*An...aid? Why would one require aid? Are not organics usually aroused? That is what the holos seemed to indicate.*

"An aid is not always required, sometimes it is simply enjoyed."

The droid lets out a series of slightly complex beeps, boops and clicks. *I do not know if I am going to understand organics any time soon. The data sets are full of so many variables.*

"You're well on your way, nothing to worry about there." Cole ran a hand through his hair, ruffling his curls.

Cole frowned slightly, looking down, "yes, right, of course." He'd been enjoying their discourse, it was the most time anyone had spent conversing with him since... well, ever. He grunted in an unamused fashion, that'd explain a lot, wouldn't it? The only people I can get along with are droids. "No doubt you have things to attend to yourself, such as locating Ensign Wayne."

“Most doctors aren’t as important as they think they are.” Cole half-shrugged, “it’s the middle of the day, I tend to be busy in the morning, and again in the evening, but right now people are out getting injured, I have a little free time until they get back.”

*ahh. That is interesting. So your work times are different than other orgsnics. What else does a doctor do? *

“While some small part of a doctor’s duties lie in preventative health maintenance, I have specialised as a surgeon. For the most part, I’m not needed until someone is hurt or sick. I’m often called upon in the mornings to attend soldiers injured in night ops, or needing follow-ups on previous treatments. Then the strike force moves outs for the day’s engagements and I’ll be needed again when they return.”

“Apart from surgery, I spend much of my time studying. There are quite a number of species I work with, with a multitude of variations in physiology. A drug that is used in humans may be deadly to an elom. It takes considerable work to keep my memory fresh and to keep up with medical advancements.”
