One More Cup Of Coffee [Day 0 LN, Mess Hall, open!]

Tethys swirls the cooling caf in the bottom of her cup, a skeptical line appearing between her brows. The stuff was barely palatable hot... shrugging one shoulder, she takes another gulp, then returns her attention to the datapad propped in front of her on the mess hall table. Covertly, though, she's watching the soldiers around her as well--tense, but not nervous, most of them at least. She supposes this might not seem like much of a war compared to the recent grinding campaign against the Sith Empire.

The tall, dark human sticks out among the neatly uniformed troops, barehaded in her very non-regulation reddish-brown robes. By some unspoken consensus the soldiers have left a perimeter of unoccupied seats around her breakfast spot, but it doesn't seem to bother her.

A cup of kaff, a plate of what passed for breakfast and a Datapad, yep Vasir had all the luxuries one could afford right before a military assault. She had hoped to sleep in this morning, but then she got alerted that she would have to adjust her manifest for the third time. She was pretty sure that the quartermaster took a perverse pleasure out of making her jump through hoops.

She sat at the Jedi’s table, brushed her hair back over her ear and got to reading. She frowned and said with a distinctive Imperial accent, “This is bloody ridiculous, you have enough room to store all these blasted bombs and can’t spare a hundred bloody kilos for my equipment.”

“Sorry, I apologize,” she said looking at the Jedi, “Just talking to myself.”

"Hm?" Tethys waves off the necessity of an apology, raising a curious eyebrow in that irritatingly detached manner Jedi tend to have. "Luggage troubles, Ms.--?"

She laughed laightly and then responded, “No… just you would think they could find the space but if I have to settle for the second wave that’s fine. Oh… Vasir Rexa, Doctor Vasir Rexa… I have been wanting to get out to Bankor for some time, preferably not when it was bloody invaded by Mandalorians but that is my life right now.”

“I really do hope you Jedi sort this mess out quickly, there are plenty of sites that could be of interest to the Republic and the Order,” she said giving the Jedi her full attention.

After letting his crew finish docking the Staccato for a short reprieve aboard the Valiant Star, a gand wearing the robes and a hilt marking his membership of the Jedi Order stops by the mess hall as well to have some provisions. He notes the two humans, one of which also a Jedi, so he approaches the table with a tray of foodstuffs in tow.

<chick tee chirp weet woo click> There is a short pause as he tries to discern the rank of the other. <kit tee chit chot lak>
"Is this seat taken?" - - - - - - "Jedi.... Doctor."

"The Doctor Vasir Rexa?" Questioned the young one opposite, it was a figure under a robe, hiding her face while eating slowly, although the spoon had stayed mid way to her mouth when she heard the name of the scientist. The voice was deep and a bit slurry. The young one let the spoon back into the bowl and pulled back her hood. A set of big google eyes looked at the human pair. "I had hoped to find you sooner or later, Doctor. My name is Rekara, I'm a native of Mon Cala. Your essay on the evolution of the Herglic of Giju was brilliant! I would not had imagined that they had evolved from terrestrial organisms from the islands and marshes returning to the sea when the conditions of the planet became harsh."

There was a loud THUMP from the direction of the kaff machine. A large furry form was staring at it with narrowed bloodshot eyes; the smell of engine oil wafted over. Slowly, raised fingers counted down from three to one.

"Can we please, please, refill the freakin' kaff when we're done?" The words had a distinct growly edge to them.

A weary sigh emerged as the Shistavanen began to brew a new pot.

The sudden influx of people and the fact one knew her work made her smile and she replied, “Wow I… I am astonished that you are so well read, master Jedi. Which in hindsight is just silly, your Order has one of the best libraries in the galaxy. I would love to walk those halls.”

“So not a doctor of medicine, I take it.” Tethys quirks an eyebrow at the sudden influx. “Your equipment might be safer going down in the second wave, Dr. Rexa. I don’t know exactly what you’ve got, but I will guess it isn’t going to be improved by heavy blaster fire.” Her lips turn up slightly. “What kind of sites? I had heard that Bankor was a recently settled planet.”

Then she registers Rekara and sets down her cup, a small but real smile breaking across her face. ”Well met, Jedi. You are far from home,” she says... in fluent Calamarian, with as flawless an accent as human physiology can produce. The sound of her consonants even suggests the regional dialect of the equatorial zone.

“Recently settled by the Republic and even that is actually incorrect. There have been migrations and colonies over time and the recent colonization is just another attempt. The planet has been under control of an older Sith based Empire in the far past and even hosted a small Jedi temple at one point, well more an outpost than outright temple,” she said honestly.

“There is also a Force tradition I would love to study in closer detail, they eschew the more mainstream views of the Force espoused by the Jedi and Sith,” she said looking at her datapad.

“I see,” says Tethys, raising a brow again. “That’s intriguing, Doctor. My information was incomplete.” She picks up her cup again, frowns slightly at its congealing contents, sets it down. “There is a native Force tradition active right now? Or do you mean this group also left archaeological evidence long ago?”

The smell of fresh kaff began to fill the room. Reaching for the biggest mug he could find Rav filled it to the brim and took a big swig. "Finally."

Grabbing some snacks he pulled out a chair and looked over the small group who had assembled in the mess hall. A fish, a bug, and some humans. No one he knew.

The talk of ancient civilisations peaked his interest and his ears pricked up. Ancient ruins often meant ancient tech. He looked over at the woman with the unusual accent as he sipped his drink.

Tethys nods politely to Rav and the mysterious Gand. She introduces herself at the next viable pause in the flow of conversation.

“They are there now, they isolated themselves on an untamed continent last I heard, but the location is not exactly a secret they just like the peace. The Azanti Order is the name, some call them monks, not sure if they qualify but they have an different view of the Force and call it the Way,” she responded quite happily to discuss the subject.

“I hope I get a chance to speak with them.”

The Shistavanen smiled slightly. "Specialist Devaroo, pleased to meet you Ms Jedi." His eyes flicked over to the archaeologist.

"A peaceful untamed continent sure sounds nice right about now."

"Tethys Carrack. A pleasure." Tethys nods politely to the furry Specialist. "Hmm." She leans back in her seat, her expression mostly neutral. "Perhaps we'll have some chance to visit and make contact. If they haven't run afoul of the Mandalorians." From what she's heard, the occupiers haven't exactly been gentle, though an obscure sect living in the wilderness might possibly escape their interest.

Tethys eyes the scientist, noting that Rexa, along with Rav, is in the minority of beings at this table who don't wear a lightsaber. "It's unusual for someone who is not trained in sensing the Force to take such an interest in the history of the Jedi Order and its sister traditions," she remarks. "Perhaps it shouldn't be, but so it goes. How did you come by your research topic?"

“I doubt it is all that peaceful, Mandalorians love to hunt and the Viridian Sea is some of the best hunting in the sector, by all accounts,” she said thoughtfully.

"It's probably real nice, but not a patch on my old stompin grounds. I used to go hunting every day back on Uvena." He took a big slug of the kaff and wiped his mouth on his sleeve, which left behind an oily mark on his snout.

"Of course now I'm a little...rusty." Rav's expression asked the question - Do you get it? Do you? Do you get my pun? You like puns don't you? - but he just kept quiet and took another sip.

The Gand nods at the introductions and gives his own as he settles down.

<Chit Chat Book Tee Shir Kee Tip>
"I am Hamelin of the Jedi Order. May we bring the blessings of death upon Bankor."

He takes a moment to hold his breathe. Then he quickly removes it just long enough to stuff some nutrient bars into his maw then quickly munches down.

The respirator only amplifies the crunching sounds coming from his as maw in this somewhat amusing scene of a Gand with its face stuffed with food and trying to eat it all at once.

That’s a little heavy, master Jedi,” the Doctor replied turning her eyes to the Gand.

<Hit Bee Chip Slee Slum> The Gand shakes his head.
"Not at all. Death is a part of the natural cycle. It is not to be feared."

<Zoom Slick Cheat Boo Goomba Troopa>
"All things come to an end but that also means that it heralds new beginnings and new life as well."

“Just seems a little dark for Jedi, but then again you are right it is a natural part of the cycle,” she said relenting.

Tethys chuckles briefly at the pun. She isn't especially good at wordplay in Basic herself, and as a consequence she's usually at least mildly impressed when other non-native speakers pull it off. "I imagine you hunted with more finesse than Bankor's current top predators, Specialist."

Vasir Rexa wrote:“Just seems a little dark for Jedi, but then again you are right it is a natural part of the cycle,” she said relenting.

"I'd venture to say most Jedi prefer not to bring endings to things before their natural times," Tethys puts in. "Lives flow and ebb, but cutting them down before they've finished growing often leads to suffering. Like this colony we're bound for," she frowns slightly. "From what you say, Doctor, many civilizations have come and gone on the planet, but to let the current one be cut off so abruptly would still seem unfortunate."

“True though they have done some extreme acts on, they being the Jedi especially when it comes to dealing with the Sith even how they dealt with Darth Revan before he redeemed was a bit more underhanded,” she responded.

“You are right though we need to do what we can to preserve this current civilization from destruction. I feel better seeing Jedi, no offense to the soldiers but it gives me a shot of confidence.”

"That's true, and I'm not the right person to either defend or stand judgement on those old Masters." Tethys shrugs one shoulder. "Though from what I've read about Revan's life, that was not a decision the Council at the time took lightly. If all beings deliberated as seriously before choosing to alter the life course of another sentient being without consent, we might all be better off."
