Niall had a wave and a friendly (if not warm) greeting for each new person who showed up. Even Layne.

Veeone saluted the Captain and then continued his digging.

"Roger, roger."

Hamelin greets everyone and comes to help out as well. He picks up a shovel and helps with the digging wherever it may be needed.

Tethys is present, staking out string to mark and level out the path of a pipeline. It's a method far older than space travel, but... it works, and it doesn't call for any fancy surveying tools the Resistance doesn't have. After a while she pauses to strip off her outer robe and toss it on a nearby bit of ramshackle wall, returning to the warm work with her arms exposed by her sleeveless tunic. Soon enough she's hammering in another stick not far from her insectile fellow-Jedi.

Hamelin greets his fellow Jedi. He lets go of his shovel which keeps lifting dirt on its own, albeit somewhat clumsily. <Yucime pilec quiv povilrm>
"Good afternoon Knight Carrack. A good chance to get some exercise and aid the people of Bankor."

Tethys, with a section of string clenched in her teeth to keep the tension on while she adjusts a stake, just nods. Not for the first time, she considers how convenient it would be to belong to a species with more than a paltry two prehensile limbs.

A bit later, once she's tied off the stake, she says with a slight, wry lift to her eyebrows, "Not the most balanced form of exercise." She shrugs her shoulders to loosen them before going to place the next marker. "Good for everyone's health in the long run, though," she adds, casting a satisfied look at the water purifying unit sitting in the bed of its transport near the work site.

<Soume comgr usje doem aum e dobe> Hamelin replies as the shovel returns to his hands.
"We can only make the most of what we have. I hope you have been well since we last spoke."

"Fine," she says simply, measuring out another length of sting between her hands. "I am not impressed with our opponents so far, though."

Hamelin wiggles his antennae. <Somf grom asoum comeal slufl gpo>
"Oh? Have you already fought them a number of times? How did those encounters turn out?"

"Once so far. Out at the coast, where their commander had them lock bomb vests on to a handful of civilians." Tethys appears to forget her primitive surveying tools for a moment, wearing an expression as if she's just bitten in to something unpleasant. "They were told to cooperate or their children would be killed. Once we'd neutralized the bombs, though, it... wasn't much of a fight."

Still frowning, she adds, "I am sure there are more formidable fighters among them, but on the whole they seem to have all the pleasure in cruelty of their famous ancestors, and not much of the zest for even combat."

Hamelin nods. <Somc fokerk sayjem cookcm efinm dscun efk clleul asok>
"I have heard that some carry a Code of Warriors that is respectable. Using hostages sullies whatever honour and glory they may be seeking to obtain."

Then he continues. <Asdoidk dinc efime asupen vpleiu> Then bows his head to the other Jedi.
"I am glad that you and the others came to the aid of those children. Ones so young should not be so close to receiving the blessings of death before they have a chance to make a worthwhile ending. You have my thanks."

<Sok fdfojm eunc cpoil mueller somc aie>
"I came across some Mandalorians beating a local yesterday at the museum. I fought with them long enough for the local to escape before I withdrew as well."

Tethys shrugs. "I am not certain I would call their warrior code respectable. Or rather, I can't say that I respect it. But it's true, some of these Kryze and their allies hardly even seem to honor their own ethics."

<Adoim Finm sdfim dfoicm fpoel cune coman> Hamelin comments.
"Even if we do not approve, it benefits us to try to understand how the Mandalorians think. Both in parlay and combat in case there is an easier way to force them to retreat from Bankor."

"As I understand it, retreat and defeat are one and the same to them," Tethys says dryly. "At least there's some benefit in knowing how they think, so we can predict their actions. But not all of them seem to follow that code closely. They are still only people, after all." If Jedi didn't all adhere perfectly to their own Code, how much more must that be true for a passion-driven bunch like the Mandalorians?

<Sfime ceim asipen dvup povkmer> Hamelin responds.
"We can only do what we can with what we know and hope for the best. Though the people of Bankor need something to believe it. Whether than be the Resistance or the Republic."

"Their resolution seems very strong as it is." She purses her lips a bit while tying off a knot. "That is good, but by the sound of things they have crossed some lines themselves in defending their planet."

"Mm." She snips an end of the string with a penknife and picks up the next stake. "Have you been in an engagement like this before?"

"Not like this." - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Growing up on the streets of the Outer Rim. I had to do what I needed to in order to survive. It was not until my master found me that I found another way to do things. A better way that did not merely return me back to where I was before."

He looks over to her. <Unicoa saim eopem asudm>

"As a padawan, I saw the ends of many skirmishes and assisted my master in forestalling others. But I was never engaged directly in the war with the Sith." Which was the big war of her lifetime, until recently.

She glances down the line of her surveying string, then back in the other direction. Smooth ground for a ways... she can probably go another three or four meters before placing the next stakes.

"I am going to carry on with this task," she holds up the ball of string in explanation. "But we'll talk further another time."

((trying to wrap my D2 threads, since I'm rapidly forgetting what had and hadn't happened in any given time slot that day!))
